The construction of 58 new apartments at Birmingham’s landmark island community, Port Loop, is gathering pace as Caddick nears completion of its first Midlands project on behalf of joint venture partners, Urban Splash and Places for People.
With the final touches being made to the six-storey development ahead of completion early this year, Caddick has completed a programme of social value initiatives resulting in a positive impact on the local community.
The programme included the employment of three apprentices as part of the Port Loop project team, with careers presentations also given to construction students at the city’s James Watts College to support the future workforce.
Charity initiatives have included a £1,000 donation to Birmingham Care Group Food Pantry to support its ‘Kids Eat Free’ campaign to help local families in crisis. Elsewhere in the city, Caddick volunteered at Birmingham Settlement Nature and Wellbeing Centre as part of the business’ annual Communities Week initiative in October.
Work began on the new six-storey development at Port Loop in 2023 and marked Caddick’s first project in the Midlands following its launch in the region in July last year. Since its appointment, Caddick has worked closely with the region’s sub-contractors, and has appointed 80% of Port Loop’s supply chain from within 30 miles of the site.
Ray O’Sullivan, Regional Managing Director of Caddick Construction Midlands, commented: “As Caddick’s first project in the Midlands, Port Loop is very special to myself and the team. Urban Splash and Places for People’s regeneration masterplan is ambitious and transformative for the city, and we’re very proud to be part of such a high profile project in Birmingham.
“When we launched in the Midlands, we did so with a commitment to use our presence positively for the region. At Port Loop, we’ve engaged a network of local supply chain partners, and worked with local colleges and charities to play our part in making a difference to the community. We’re registered partners of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, and the Port Loop team scored an impressive 45 out of 45 during our on-site inspections. They thoroughly deserve this recognition, and are now focused on the final phase of construction as we prepare for handover next year.”
Managing Director for Regeneration and Development at Urban Splash: “Across our Urban Splash neighbourhoods, we prioritise meaningful connections with local communities, working closely with supply chain partners like Caddick to engage with local people, create jobs, and support fantastic community initiatives. I’m delighted that our recent efforts have had such a positive impact."
Nilam Buchanan, Regional Managing Director for Developments Central and North of Places for People: “As the UK’s leading social enterprise we are dedicated to transforming lives and nurturing thriving communities. The progress at Port Loop aligns seamlessly with our nationwide mission, and we’re proud of the impact – helping the community while delivering much-needed homes for Birmingham."
