This Women in Construction Week, we’re spotlighting some of the amazing stories from across our team. Our Senior Quantity Surveyor, Julie Umpleby, has been in the industry for 36 years and over this time, has witnessed – and helped shape – significant change.
“My career has come full circle. When I started, there were very few women in construction; it was nearly unheard of. You had to fit in, and prove yourself. It was a very competitive environment. In those early days, the things we take for granted now weren’t designed for women in mind. I couldn’t even find PPE that fit me. Support networks were rare, but I was fortunate enough to begin my career in a team that had two other women. Having their support at the time was a huge help, and we are all still friends today.
“The industry I see now is very different. It’s much more encouraging and welcoming, and there’s a real understanding of the benefits of a diverse workforce. Different perspectives can bring better results; and the industry is thriving because it embraces difference.”
Julie’s path to construction
“The industry wasn’t part of my original plan. Construction chose me rather than me choosing it. After I finished my A Levels, I applied for a range of roles and initially got an admin job in the NHS. Then I was contacted by a company I’d originally interviewed with for a trainee QS role, and the rest is history. Early in my career I completed an honours degree while gaining hands-on site experience, blending the learning with real-world construction work. At the time, it was important to do it that way, especially as a woman. It gave me real site awareness and understanding.”
A role model for the next generation
“I have the benefit of experience now, and I’d like to think I am a visible and positive role model for young women coming into the industry. During my career I’ve had the chance to mentor others and contribute to gender diversity groups, and in doing so I hope I’ve helped create the kind of supportive environment that I would have valued at the start of my career.
“Anyone considering a job in construction should go for it. If you thrive in a team, enjoy problem solving and like variety in your day-to-day work, but also enjoy maths and logic, don’t discount construction. It will give you all that and more. Construction is a very rewarding industry. You’re making a difference, not just to your business, but to your community. Our work leaves a lasting legacy. There’s something special about being able to drive past a building and say, ‘I helped deliver that.’”
