Women in Construction Week 2026: ‘As a woman in construction, I don’t feel any different to the rest of the team’

Our Apprentice Site Manager, Lucy Booth, is new to the industry, a career she’s always wanted to pursue but wasn’t sure if it would be possible. Now six months into her career, Lucy has been met with a welcoming and supportive environment.

“I’ve always been fascinated by construction, and how everything comes together. I knew this was the industry I wanted to work in, but I wasn’t sure if it was an option for me as a woman.

“Through completing a T-Level course in design, planning and surveying, I was able to learn about and experience the different areas of construction, from the design and mathematics side to being hands-on working on one of Caddick’s sites. This kick-started my career with Caddick offering me my current apprenticeship following my work placement with them.”

Being a young woman in construction

“Going into an industry that has been male-dominated for so long was nerve racking but it feels important to me to show other women like me that it’s possible. Despite always wanting to work in construction, I didn’t know if it was possible so I want other women to know that it is and it’s not as daunting or as difficult as it may seem to get started.

“I’m still new to the industry but my experience has been a supportive one. I’m one of two women on site, but it’s not a problem. Everyone is really encouraging, and I don’t feel any different from my male colleagues.

“My advice to any woman considering a career in construction is to just do it! Don’t think twice, if it is something you want to do then it is worth it.”

Looking to the future

“Working in construction means no day is the same. I love experiencing something different every day, there’s always new things to learn and see. Over the next two years I will complete my level 4 apprenticeship and once I’ve done this, my goal is to study at degree level to become a fully qualified site manager.”
