In 2025, Caddick Construction completed Bolt Works, Placefirst’s brand new neighbourhood of 122 one and two-bedroom private rental apartments in Halifax, elevating the quality of new homes in Halifax town centre.

Taking a fabric-first approach, the new apartments at Bolt Works have been designed to be energy efficient with renewable technologies installed, including solar panels, air source heat pumps and innovative heat recovery technologies. Bike storage and electric vehicle charging are also incorporated to support green travel and contribute to carbon reduction in Halifax town centre.

A complex town centre project

Delivered in a tight town centre location on brownfield land, construction of the Bolt Works development presented a number of challenges, including tight site constraints and limited material storage. A strict just-in-time delivery schedule was implemented to manage site logistics. The site team also adapted the programme throughout the build, utilising full scaffolding to install the building facade, replacing the need for MEWPs and mast climbers. This optimised the available space on site and helped to streamline the project timeline.

A project for the community

Fulfilling our commitment as a registered partner of the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), the team at Bolt Works acted as a responsible neighbour while contributing positively to the local community. This was recognised by the CCS during a site inspection, with the team receiving top marks of 45/45 during a site inspection. In April 2025, the team also went on to win a silver award at CCS National Site Awards.

Social Value

Social value at Bolt Works included:

  • £2,000 donated by the site team and Placefirst to Happy Days Homeless Charity, which was match funded by Aviva;
  • £1,000 donated to Old Brodleians Rugby Club
  • The donation of crockery from the former Caddick HQ to Happy Days Soup Kitchen
  • The donation of unrequired timber, timber cut offcuts and pallets to Calderdale Wood Recycling, which supports employment service within Calderdale Council, helping individuals with disabilities and health conditions overcome employment barriers
  • 63% local supply chain spend (within a 30 mile radius of site)

The project also contributed to local employment and training with the Caddick Construction team supporting seven apprentices on the project. The team also spent a lot of time engaging with local schools and colleges, engaging with a total of 179 local students. This included time spent with disengaged students from Project Challenge and Halifax Whiteley Center and Witherslack Group, giving SEND students site talks and also the opportunity to visit the Bolt Works site.
